The Ordnance Survey list has 6 Benchmarks in grid SE1646, all Cut Marks.
1 – CUT MARK – NO218 MAIN ST SW FACE 3.7M W ANG
FOUND IN GOOD CONDITION
The Cut Mark is on the South West face of No.218 Main Street, 3.7mtrs from the West corner
Rather than say the mark is ‘x’ metres from the corner, why don’t they just say it’s on the left hand door post ? It would be a lot easier to spot it quickly if this more descriptive wording was used
2 – CUT MARK – NO169 MAIN ST NE FACE 3.0M E ANG
MISSING
The Cut Mark is on the North East face of No.169 Main Street, 3.0mtrs from the East Corner
It should be on the door post, but there’s nothing there anymore – both door posts are badly worn away at the height the mark should be
3 – CUT MARK – NO141 MAIN ST NE ANG
FOUND IN GOOD CONDITION
The Cut Mark is on the North East corner of No.141 Main Street
A nice clear mark
4 – CUT MARK – NBM WALL E SIDE JUNC LANGFORD RD STATION RD
NOT FOUND
The Cut Mark is on the wall on the East side of the junction of Langford Road and Station Road
I couldn’t find it, for once the description is not very specific as there is a wall at the north and south side of the junction. The South side wall has been rebuilt but the North side wall still looks original – but there’s no sign of the mark that I could find
Another thing I have to say is don’t try looking for this cut mark at school leaving time, far too many people around to be able to search for a mark on a wall !
5 – CUT MARK – CONGL CH S SIDE MAIN ST NE ANG
FOUND IN POOR CONDITION
The Cut Mark is on the North East corner of the Congregational Church on the South Side of Main Street
The Church must be made of softer rock that the houses as this mark has weathered and deteriorated quite badly
6 – CUT MARK – BLDG NO70 MAIN ST W ANG
FOUND IN GOOD CONDITION
The Cut Mark is on the West corner of No.70 Main Street
The stone is beginning to flake away at the edges of the cuts, but it’s all there still
