Summer holiday time again, and unlike last year where I was in the cache desert of Turkey, this year I went to Gran Canaria where geocaches appear to be common, but appearances aren’t always what they seem, especially in places that get as many people visiting as major tourist resorts.
I went on holiday with a group of friends, 16 of us in all, but only Adam (UKCacheMag) and I went caching while the others went sunbathing !
10th September 2012 – Down Way1 GC1QDGV – cache #2052
Adam maybe doesn’t always dress appropriately for caching !
This was the nearest cache to our hotel – the Puerto Azul… in fact it was further to the hotel entrance from our room than the cache !
At this cache I dropped off my new trackable “The Penny Drops”, so it can make it’s way back home to me
10th September 2012 – The Amadores View GC3FF8E – cache #2053
At the top of the hill near the Hotel we had a search around for this cache, eventually located in a crack in the wall
10th September 2012 – Down Way2 GC1QDH7 – cache #2054
After we had found the caches at the top of the hill, we decided that we would go for the caches on the way down from the hotel to the town. GPS signal was not too hot for this cache due to the rock face bouncing the signal around, but with the hint and cachers eyes we soon spotted the container
10th September 2012 – Take a seat GC1N9FX – cache #2055
Nice easy find. but no seat !
10th September 2012 – The Mirror GC2027R – cache #2056
Easy to find the cache when the name is as explicit as this
10th September 2012 – Puerto Rico No:1 GC17ZP8 – cache #2057
Soon found the log. No sign of the container
11th September 2012 – Faro Puerto Rico GC286MH – cache #2058
The next day we went looking for the caches on the other side of town, starting at this one out on the end of the harbour breakwater… it was there we discovered that we were not as agile at clambering over the large rocks as we used to be in our youth
11th September 2012 – Heaven (Fettet Brinner) GC1N9HV – cache #2059
We walked up from the cache on the end of the harbour wall, up the long stairway and then along the ridge to this cache at the highest point of the hills overlooking Puerto Rico… Not an easy walk on a hot day.
I left Adam sitting in the shade at the side of the road about half a mile from the cache as he said he couldn’t make it – but he got there in the end !
12th September 2012 – E.T. – Der Außerirdische GC3BXAT – cache #2060
The next day we took a ride over to Playa Del Ingles in order to grab some caches, we had a bit of trouble trying to decipher the German hint for this first cache by the telephone until we realised that it was actually just English written backwards !
12th September 2012 – En to´el medio 01 Playa del Ingles GC28Z3E – cache #2061
There were a few caches missing along the seafront, the dangers of thousands of people passing by I suppose, but after 3 DNF’s we came to this cache on the bridge over the motorway. This one we found easily although it was well disguised as an electrical junction box – cacher’s experience soon spots that there is no purpose for a junction box there
After this we didn’t find GC3661V Green Ocean – we did see a large lizard go into a hole in the wall and weren’t too keen on investigating whether it was sat on top of the cache !
12th September 2012 – Centro Comersial GC2NRD2 – cache #2062
A cache hidden in the railings of the shopping centre in San Augustin. It took a while to find this one as we didn’t have the spoiler picture and so had to check every possibility from the bottom to the top… but we got there in the end !
After this we didn’t find Memorial Bungalow 640A – We climbed up to the top of the hill, searched under every rock but only found empty cans and bottles
12th September 2012 – San Agustin – Park GC2NMT8 – cache #2063
The last cache of our Gran Canarian trip, the hint was prescriptive – inside the blue tree stump, well inside the stump was a lidless container, a torn plastic bag and the remains of a logsheet
And that was all the caching we had time or energy for in Gran Canaria… after all we were out in the bars until 3 – 4 O’Clock in the morning, and we did have to work on our tans !
