Roundhay Park in Leeds is one of the largest ‘city’ parks in Europe and so has a correspondingly large number of caches in it. I have decided that it is about time I went and found them, so will be making several visits over the next few weeks to clear all the caches I can.
The first visit was made on a Saturday Afternoon of a Bank Holiday weekend… maybe not the best time to visit as the park was full of people !
2nd June 2012 – Park Lane Cache GC1QP9A – cache #1711
The first cache I did was not in the park at all, but on a lamppost on the road bounding the park. I was walking from the car park to the North end of the park and decided to go for this cache on the way
2nd June 2012 – Roundhay Park Trail 6 – Take the High Path GC3C8F0 – cache #1712
There is a trail of caches in the park, leading to a bonus, I’m guessing if you do it properly you do it as a circular trail, but as I was starting clearing the caches in the park from the North end downwards I started at cache number 6, which was in the woods, so was at the base of a tree covered by a rock
2nd June 2012 – Roundhay Park Trail 7 – Bunker View GC3C8F4 – cache #1713
Still in the woods, but this time not hidden by a rock – but the cache was the rock itself
2nd June 2012 – Fool’s Gold? GCJCPV – cache #1714
A Puzzle cache which I had solved several months earlier and not got around to retrieving. Took a while to find as the GPS was pretty useless under the trees… so I went round everything in the vicinity that looked like it might match the clue, and eventually spotted the cache
2nd June 2012 – Roundhay Park Trail 8 – Can you see the Castle GC3C8F8 – cache #1715
There is a ‘ruined castle’ in Roundhay Park – which is actually just a 19th Century Folly… and you can’t see it from this cache, which was a bit of an effort to get to the way I went – as the crow flies from Fools Gold, straight down a steep muddy banking with the cache hidden almost at the bottom in the stream
2nd June 2012 – Roundhay Park Trail 4 – Woods Path GC3C8EN – cache #1716
It was a bit of a challenge to find the right path for this one, the trail route assumes you are doing the caches sequentially and tells you how to get to the other end of the path, but doesn’t tell you how to get to it fram cache 8 ! Still in the woods, the GPS signal still pretty poor and I had to do a bit of searching around for the cache which the hint said was under wood… well there was lots of it about ! and the cache when I did spot it was not under wood at all but in the open and half way down the banking under the prickliest holly bush I have ever had to deal with ! I did replace the cache in somewhere that matched the hint
And that was all I had time for on my first Roundhay Park visit, there are another 20 or so caches still to go for so I will be back
