Five past Nine on a Saturday night and a message pings up on our messenger group – ‘Who hasn’t done Titanic’s Funnel ?’ followed a few minutes later by ‘Is tomorrow any good ?’
And so, 18 hours later, a gang of us met on Calder View for the attempt.
19th September 2021 – Titanics Funnel GC2NKRN – cache #5669
Titanics funnel is a cache in the middle of the river Calder, on the supports of an old bridge or pipe run or some such.
Jeff had his boat and oars and lifejackets which was really all the equipment that was needed… I apparently was dressed as if I was going to stay on the bank and watch… the others seemed to think they were going to have to swim for the cache – though to be fair, there were those who nearly did.
So we took it in turns going over to the cache, Jeff rowed the first two people over and made it look easy which lulled LSB and Veldagia, as well as The Catts into a false sense of security… rowing the boat in the direction you want it to go proved not as easy as Jeff made it look
The Catts, poor workmen blaming the tools, blamed the rowlocks for the fact that they nearly went down the weir before they worked out how to propel the boat through the water.
CRPK and myself were the last pair and ignored the rowlocks, grabbed an oar each and paddled canoe style making short work of the trip (we would probably have been rubbish rowing too, but I have done a bit of canoeing in the past so paddling seemed by far the better option)
